Obituary of Shirley Ardith Dickmeyer

Mrs. Shirley Ardith Dickmeyer, 82, passed away Saturday afternoon, November 21, 2015 at Mercy Hospital Lincoln in Troy, MO. Born August 31, 1933 in Joliet, IL, she was the daughter of William and Dorothy Suhling Haynes. In 1945, Shirley joined the Winfield Methodist Church where she was the youth leader until 1998. She then transferred her membership to the Elsberry United Methodist Church where she continued being an active member. After graduating from Winfield High School in 1951, Shirley furthered her education at Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL. In 1952, Shirley began working for the American Car and Foundry in St. Charles, MO, where she was employed for 7 years. Shirley was united in marriage on April 13, 1956 in Winfield to Walter David Dickmeyer. In 1961, Shirley began working for the Winfield Banking Company until her retirement in 1992 after 30 years of employment. In 1998, Shirley became involved with the OATS Transportation System. She received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2004 and was a member of the Lincoln County Committee. Shirley’s activities following her retirement included playing softball, bowling and fishing. In her later years, Shirley enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles and playing double deck solitaire. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Dorothy Haynes; her sister Muriel Birkhead and her husband, Paul; one nephew, Derwin Birkhead; and her beloved husband of 58 years, Walter Dickemeyer, who died August 29, 2014. Survivors include one niece, Yvonne Turnbull of Curryville, MO; three great-nephews: Michael Birkhead, Darrell Turnbull and Douglas Turnbull; one great-niece, Beth Haley; many more relatives and numerous friends. Shirley requested there be no funeral services. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Summit Grove Cemetery near Kampsville, IL. Memorials may be made to Summit Grove Cemetery in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 S. 5th Street; Elsberry, MO 63343.
